Meknes, is a city of Morocco which pulls its name of the Berber Meknassa of the name of the tribe founder of the city. The inhabitants of this tribe were called Amknassen, Amknasse in the singular which means warrior and fighter. It is the administrative centre of the administrative region of Meknes-Tafilalet, in the center of the country. The city is situated in 120km east of Rabat and in 60km on the West of Fes. It is one of four imperial cities of Morocco. It was the capital of Morocco during the reign of Moulay Ismaïl under the dynasty Alaouite.

 History Of The City of Meknes :

The history of Meknes seems to go back up to the creation of a rural village not strengthened in the VIIIth century. The installation in the IXth century of a Berber tribe, the Meknassa, which establish their camp in the North of the oued Boufekrane, gives its name to the city. The Almoravides makes of it a military site in the XIth century.

The Almohades destroyed the city, to build bigger and more charming one with mosques and powerful fortifications. When they seized it, Mérinides built médersas (traditionnal schools), kasbahs and mosques at the beginning of the XIVth century. Under Wattassides, it constituted a prosperous city.
In the XVIIIth century, Meknes became the administrative capital of Morocco, under the reign of the sultan alaouite Moulay Ismail, who made the glory of the city thanks to the money gained by the resale of the Christian sailors captured on sea and kept in the immense subterranean prison " Cara's prison ".
