 Presentation of The City Of Essaouira :

Essaouira, Formerly called Amogdul (good guarded) in Berber, Mogdura in Portuguese, Mogadur in Spanish and Mogador in French, Essaouira (good drawn) is a harbour city of Morocco on the Atlantic Coast. Its medina is registered on the UNESCO world heritage list.

 History Of The City of Essaouira :

Its history goes back up to the VIIth century before J.C ; Phéniciens made stopover on the island of Mogador when they came down towards the equator. Juba II, king of Mauritania, settled later a factory of purple, then very popular by Romain there. The site was occupied then alternately by the Portuguese and the sultans Saadiens. The real founder of the city of Essaouira was the sultan Alaouite Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah who confided the plan to Théodore Cornut (pupil of Vauban) in 1760.
Essaouira (formerly Mogador) becomes very fast the port of Tombouctou, we exchange manufactured goods in Europe for some gold, some salt, some sugar, and ostrich's feathers there. More recently, in the 50s and 60, Essaouira became the privileged refuge of artists and stars of current time (Cat Steven - Jimmy Hendrix) who came to get fresh ideas there, and Orson Welles turned(shot) his famous film " Othello " there.

 Geography and climate of Essaouira :

Situated in the feet of the Great Atlas, Essaouira is built on a rocky peninsula. In front of the ocean, surrounded with hills, with forests and with dunes, With average temperatures which vary between 18 and 28 °, the climate of Essaouira is soft all year long. Nights are fresh but feel reassured, even in winter the temperatures do not fall below 10°C. To Essaouira the wind is omnipresent, even in summer a small jacket is not of excess when the wind blows, this is well worth to it, its nickname of " City of the Wind ".
